Director Gemma Lee is an experienced and uniquely talented Australian filmmaker. Her work is typified by striking, memorable imagery with a strong emphasis on storytelling and performance. She’s a highly sought after TVC director and has made her mark with stunning, narrative-driven work for high end clients.

Born and raised in Scotland, Gemma has a finely trained eye. She studied drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art and has a background in photography. During this time she worked as a lighting director at MTV in London.

Gemma emigrated to Australia in her twenties, earning a Master’s in Writing and Directing from the prestigious Victorian College of the Arts. Her graduating film Heaven was awarded ‘Best Master’s Film’ and ‘Best Screenplay’ and went onto screen at the Oscar-accredited Flickerfest. She found early acclaim directing music videos for Australia’s leading musical artists, collaborating with major labels Sony, EMI, Universal and Liberation.

A number of Gemma’s short films have also enjoyed much success, notably her award-winning film The Wake, which stars Angus Sampson (Insidious, Mad Max: Fury Road) and Gulliver McGrath (Lincoln, Dark Shadows) and screened at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival in New York where it was nominated for the ‘Jury Prize’. Her horror short Bedtime premiered at influential genre film festival, Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal and was invited to screen before the Australian premiere of Ready Or Not, as well as screening at host of other prominent genre festivals.

Gemma has created the TV show High Voltage, which is in development with Easy Tiger. She’s also currently developing the TV show The Bluffs, adapted from Kyle Perry’s award-winning novel with First Option Pictures and the feature film, Blackwood, which has been supported by Screen Australia. Her latest film The Junction, was recently shortlisted for the Sundance Writers Lab in 2023.
